Eating well

If you have been diagnosed with a heart condition, or have been told that you are at risk, one of the best things you can do is change your diet to one that is more heart-healthy. When you have heart disease, eating well doesn't mean fine restaurants and gourmet meals all the time. The occasional treat is fine, but focusing on foods that will help you lower your cholesterol and blood pressure is the key to long-term heart health.

There are many fad diets that come and go, but your chances are better if you stop looking at the word "diet" as one of those nasty four-letter words! Yes, it might have four letters, but your diet sustains you and can protect your health. You will be most successful at maintaining a healthy diet if you get some help from experts, such as nutritionists or dieticians, and develop a plan that will turn into a lifetime of healthy eating. It's not that hard!

That doesn't mean you can't ever enjoy a baked potato again. You can still enjoy all the foods you love; you can even indulge in the occasional dark chocolate - just be careful with portion size and limit salty and high-fat options.
