Quitting smoking

If you don't smoke, don't start. And try to stay away from secondhand smoke as well.

If you do smoke, it may be time to try quitting. Once you've decided to quit, you need to understand that quitting smoking isn't a "straight line" process. There will be ups and downs, successes and disappointments. The key is to relax and stick with it.

Be sure you're mentally prepared to quit. Talk to family and friends so you know you'll have their support. Then talk to your doctor about choosing the right program for you. Understand the various stages of quitting so you know what to expect and don't let old notions of smoking sabotage your efforts. Your doctor or pharmacist will be able to recommend strategies and medications to manage withdrawal symptoms.

Millions of people have quit smoking so you can do it, too. It will take time and effort, but eventually, you can succeed at quitting smoking for good - your own good!
